Surly Cross Check Gearing ?

Bericht door pmorrise » ma apr 28, 2008 3:10 pm

Help folks, I'm building up a surly cross check single speed, but I've no idea where to start with the gearing ?, on my current 26" kona I'm running a 34/18, I'd like something a little faster for the cross check, and I'll be running a 39 tooth ring up front, so I was wondering what would people advise for the rear ? around 21 ?

cheers

For commuting on my CX with fattie slicks, I like 42x16. Even road hills can be painful then, but cruising 30-37kph is pure bliss. 39x16 or 39x15 for you would be similar.

For CX racing, I like my CX with 34x16. Around 39x18 for you.

Mentione gearing were for the time I was fit though, I could easily gear one cog larger out back now.

What will you use it for? Only off road? I find 39:16 a little hard, but when you also use it for commuting or shorter road rides you should not go lower. For off road use, maybe 19 or 20, but that also depends on where you ride..

Oi,

I have a Koga Miyata tourer. Somewhat similar to the cross-check. I use a 42/16 gear. It's a bit hard when pushing hills. But i've used it to do loaded touring across Holland (even the "hills" of limburg). No probs. For hard city riding and lots of stops I would use a 40/18 to have a bit more torque.
Ga verdomme met je crossmotor op een crossbaan rijden en niet op een MTB route! Asociale klojo.

Hi Folks, thanks for the replys, I'll be using it mostly off road, in flanders (new job has taken me south of the boarder !) so a little hilly in places but noting too steep, I'll have a go at 39/20 just to see how it goes (maybe as the summer goes on and the fitness improves I can drop to a 19 at the back)

Patrick

Is it your only off road rig? If not, or if you had fat wheeled bikes before, how do you rate the Cross Checks off road capabilities compared to a real MTB?

I've ridden the CC in a toertocht in Wageningen. The front tire was a violently rubbing Motoraptor (needed to lift the front at times to get rid of resonation), the rear a 44mm Mutanoraptor. It was okay to ride, and sortof fun, yet I missed the easy of braking from a Mtn style handlebar and proper brakes. As I treid to ride it like an MTB, I missed cush from the rear.

JJ, try the Bontrager XR 1.8's. I've heard they're supposed to fit, but do check.
