The start of a new age in bicycle design.
The 2013i, (short for model year 2013 Imperial), is a look into the future of high performance bicycle design. The 2013i showcases technology never before seen in the bicycle world. We decided to debut this technology in the form of a refined street specific hardtail frameset, a growing area of the mountain bike world that Evil Bikes has helped to pioneer.
The main technology showcased on the 2013i is a fully enclosed, all gear driven drivetrain now called g-boxx.
So what is g-boxx you ask??
G-boxx is a very complete yet versatile standard based on work that our engineer Dave Weagle initially carried out in early 2002. This first standard in 2002 was planned to be the basis for a prototype Evil downhill frame that was to be shown at Interbike 2002. Because of time constraints, fabrication of the fully designed Evil prototype downhill frame was never completed. The project was put on hold. In early 2003, Dave was introduced to Karl Nicolai through their mutual good friend Danny Kaey. After Dave and Karl spoke, it became apparent that they both shared a mutual dream of an internal gearbox standard that could be used around the world. Together they started the G-boxx consortium aimed at bettering bicycles for all time. Dave, consulting with Karl and using the prototype 2002 Evil gearbox standard as a base, devised an incredibly versatile new standard which ultimately has become the g-boxx standard.
The 2013i was designed around this g-boxx, and shows just how versatile a standard of this type can actually be. Over the next year, the 2013i will be tested rigorously to learn more about enclosed gearbox systems, and the structural and dynamic concerns that surround them.
You can read more about the technical features of this incredible frame in the tech section of the 2013i page, and also at www.g-boxx.org.
As of now, g-boxx technology is not ready for public use. As we learn more and refine the system, advances will be made. This is not intended to be an overnight project however. Evil Bikes is dedicated to proof of quality before sale. Notice the name of the frame, year 2013 Imperial. Stay tuned!
