Godzijdank het gaat weer beter met Josh Bender. Zou toch erg jammer zijn als zon talent in een verlamde toestand zou geraken.I got a phone call from Alaska on Friday. It was great to hear Josh Bender's familiar slow delivery on the line after his recent tribulations. After two weeks in intensive care after his successful back surgery, Bender figured the best plan was to go home to Fairbanks to recover and chill out for a spell.

Bender's crash resulted in a badly broken ankle that was diagnosed on his first trip to hospital. They rebuilt his ankle and sent him home without further examination of his spine even though he was in serious discomfort. He returned by ambulance later when the pain in his back was too much to bear. At that point X-rays revealed a burst L2.

Surgeons in Provo successfully fused his spine between L1 and L3 and now in Bender says "I have more titanium in me than a Moots bicycle."

Considering the mechanism of injury and his early fears Bender's lucky to be on the road to recovery. "I thought I was in a wheelchair for life dude" was how he put it.

Doctors are encouraged by his recovery so far and they believe his time off his feet is half over. Once he's back walking Bender can begin his rehab. There will likely be more surgery on his ankle to pull out some of the hardware and that injury may keep him off the bike the longest.

For now though Josh is hanging with his family, catching up with old friends and spending time reading, watching movies and enjoying Alaska for the first time in a decade.

The reason for the crash is a bit of a mystery at this point. "I stepped off like two feet from landing." It was as though an alarm went off in Bender's head but he was late to the eject switch.

On top of rehab, financial challenges lie ahead - intensive care, ambulance rides, back surgery, ankle surgery as well as his flight to Provo have dug a very deep money pit. There has been talk of a bank account set up to offset these costs and we'll keep you up to date on the details so we can chip in and help a brother out.

Everyone here on the Shore is still pulling for you Bender.
