You"ve got to feel for Tara Llanes. Less than a year removed from a crash at the Durango NORBA that brought a premature end to her 2002 season, the gated-racing specialist has had another season halted mid-stride, after the Giant-Pearl Izumi rider suffered a broken foot in a car accident on Monday in Pennsylvania.
Llanes, teammates Jared Rando and Dustin Adams, and team mechanic Matt Duniho were on their way to Vermont for the third stop of the NORBA NCS when their Ford F350 was involved in a crash with another vehicle. According to Giant team director Steve Westover, Adams and Rando escaped the incident with only minor scrapes, bumps and bruises, while Duniho, the driver of the truck, received several stitches. The driver of the other vehicle was also treated and released, and there were no other passengers in the second vehicle.
Westover added that the team truck, which was towing the 30-foot team trailer, was totaled and that the "engine was pushed three feet back from normal. It"s really bad luck for Tara, but from the sounds of it everybody was lucky as hell not to be hurt worse. They actually had to cut Tara out of the car."
As for the cause of the accident, Westover said that the police and insurance company representatives were still sorting that out, but he did say that weather conditions did not play a role and that no tickets had been issued at this point.
After going to a hospital in Pennsylvania Monday night, Llanes flew back to Southern California on Tuesday. The other team members, after receiving medical treatment, continued en route to Vermont in the team"s second vehicle, and Rando and Adams should be ready to go when competition commences on Saturday at Mount Snow.
Meanwhile, with a big assist from members of the Shimano crew, the Giant team trailer should also be arriving in Vermont by the weekend. According to Westover, "when the Shimano guys found out what happened they volunteered to drive the nine hours from Vermont to the accident site to bring the trailer up. We"ve been getting offers of support from all kinds of people. It"s been amazing."
As for Llanes, her long-term status will not be known before Thursday when she sees a specialist in California. A year ago, the then-Yeti team rider was on her way to winning a national championship in mountain cross when she crashed during race warm-ups in Durango, Colorado. That incident left her with a numerous injuries including a collapsed lung and torn knee ligaments.
"It"s hard to believe she has to go through this again," said Westover. "It seems like she just got over her last injury."
Llanes finished fourth in last weekend"s mountain cross race at Snowshoe, West Virginia, and was second in the overall standings after two of five races.

Re:Tara Llanes out...
Tis sowiezo wel een slagveld als je zo het aantal "outs" in de titels telt. Is dat normaal ofzo voor de tijd van het jaar?
